Let Humor Light The Way

I was inspired to write this after watching Jamie Foxx’s most recent comedy special where he recounts his harrowing journey after suffering a stroke. Throughout his retelling of events, he continually repeats “If I can stay funny, I can stay alive.” And these words deeply resonated with me, so much so, that here I am writing about it. Even in my own personal experiences, humor has been one of the most vital things that have gotten me through some of the most difficult moments. It is also what I infuse into my work with clients, because after all, laughter is some of the best medicine. The ability to find the funny in all those dark moments is like shining a light in a pitch dark cave - you may not be able see anything around or ahead of you, but those glimmers of light can be just enough to get you through, to help you to put one foot in front of the other. The path may not always be clear, not knowing where it will lead or how you will even get to where you need to go, but if you can hold on to (or find) those bright moments, it can also help you to find your way. Look for your (flash)light in the dark to get through because that glimmer (of hope) may just be enough.
